Greetings to CVMNAH Personnel, Students and Alumni,

Lodriguez Murray, Legislative Assistant, Health and Medicine Counsel of Washington (HMCW), sent this communication to inform us that on Thursday, November 15th, the House of Representatives failed to override President Bush's veto of the FY08 Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Bill. The vote was 277-141 -- just shy of the two-thirds majority required by the constitution. (See attached for the Final Vote Results for Roll Call 1122.)

As a result, the Senate will not vote to override the veto. Congress is now in recess until Dec. 4th. All federal agencies without an enacted FY08 appropriations bill, including NIH, CDC and HRSA (which includes COE & HCOP funding), are operating under a continuing resolution that provides funding at the FY07 level until December 14th.

Mr. Murray will keep us posted (as he has always done) on the status of negotiations between the White House and Congress on the Labor-HHS-Education bill. HMCW is an advocate not only for the CVMNAH, but also for other institutions and organizations across the nation that understand the need to train a diverse healthcare workforce.
