St. George's University Annual Veterinary Clinical Meeting

St. George’s University (SGU) was founded in 1977 in Grenada, West Indies. The original purpose of the university was to provide an offshore medical school education to United States citizens through its School of Medicine. The university has grown steadily and has increased the variety and depth of its course offerings. Courses are provided through a School of Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine (established in 1999), and School of Arts and Sciences. There is also a Graduate Studies Program offering MS, MPH, and PhD courses of study. At the present time, St. George’s University’s School of Veterinary Medicine partners with schools of veterinary medicine in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, and sends its senior veterinary students to these schools for their senior year clinical rotations. One of the partner Schools of Veterinary Medicine is Tuskegee University.AnnualVetMeetig

For the past seven years, St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine has hosted an Annual Veterinary Clinical Meeting. All of the partner schools of veterinary medicine are invited to send a representative to this meeting, with daily presentations being made by invited speakers. Since the meeting’s inception, Tuskegee University’s Veterinary Medical Hospital has been represented by Dr. Robert Horne (Small Animal Hospital, former hospital director), Dr. Rick Bridges (Large Animal Hospital, former hospital director), and, for the past 3 years, Dr. David McKenzie (Large Animal Hospital clinician and instructor). During this meeting, various partner schools present audio-visual representations of their clinical programs to the St. George’s University veterinary students, followed by an in-depth question and answer session.

At the end of the Veterinary Clinical Meeting, the SGU students are invited to an informal mixer with the partner school representatives. The SGU students then follow-up with their Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and make their choice of schools at which to perform their senior clinical rotations. Arrangements are then finalized between the administrators at SGU and the partner schools. Tuskegee University’s Veterinary Medical Hospital has had approximately 8 students from St. George’s University to come and successfully complete their senior clinical rotations.
