During the fall of 2007, the School of Veterinary Medicine at Tuskegee University was privileged to participate in the first World Rabies Day. In an effort to increase public awareness of this still prevalent and deadly disease, veterinary schools around the world hosted a number of events aimed at educating the public and continuing the efforts to control the spread of rabies. The veterinary schools at Tuskegee University and Auburn University joined forces to host an educational seminar, a rabies vaccination clinic, and several fun activities for dogs and their owners. Many animals from Lee, Macon, and surrounding counties were vaccinated against rabies. A contest was held among veterinary schools in the United States to see which school could get the largest percentage of student participation, and the Veterinary School at Tuskegee University was the winner! The prize for being the winning school was the right to host the World Rabies Day Symposium in the fall of 2008, which was a day long event that included several world renowned speakers. Another rabies vaccination clinic is slated to be held in the spring of 2009 to continue the efforts to control or eradicate rabies virus infections.
