The Horse Health Fair was started 16 years ago to address the issue of Equine Wellness. The first health fair attracted only 8 clients and was held in March of 1992. There was a second health fair in October of that same year and there were 20 clients that participated. The fair currently services between 70-100 horses. The services offered include free physical examinations, free fecal examinations, and nutrition counseling. Vaccinations are done at cost. The Coggins test, which is a test that is used to detect exposure to the virus that causes Equine Infectious Anemia, is also offered. The fair gives the veterinary students the opportunity to interact with clientele, utilize their skills and most importantly foster a working relationship between the different veterinary classes. The student chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) is involved with the horse health fair. The AAEP holds a raffle during the fair and local Merchants, such as Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn from the Vaughn Seed store, have donated items to be raffled off. Some of these items may include feed, saddles, tack, and other horse-related products. There are numerous clients who rely on this yearly event to have their horses evaluated. The Horse Health Fair has educated people about health care, nutrition and husbandry of the equine. The fair also allows for early screening for potential health problems. The Horse Health Fair is usually held on the second Saturday in April.
