School of Veterinary Medicine Dean's Advisory Board

Mission : The school of veterinary medicine advisory board is appointed by the Dean, and should consist of from 15-25 distinguished alumni and friends who will advise the Dean on issues of importance to the school with emphasis in resource development, fund raising and leadership development will be of singular importance. Members should meet at least twice a year.

Role: The board is to provide counsel, connections, and funding to promote the objectives of the school of veterinary medicine. The board is empowered to raise discretionary funds on behalf of the school of veterinary medicine. The board assists in framing long-range strategic directions of the school. The board will take on an increasingly important role in shaping the future of the school through its advocacy on behalf of the school within the veterinary community, understanding of the veterinary market place both locally and nationally, and assisting the school in pursuing national and international relevance.

Executive committee: composed of the chairman and co-chairman shall act on behalf of the Advisory Board between meetings of the board. The executive committee shall also function as the nominating committee for new members of the advisory board. The executive committee shall be the operating arm of the advisory board.

Members' responsibilities to the school:

1. Identify alumni and potential friends of the school who have the capability for substantial financial support. Assist the dean and the development office in cultivating and soliciting these and other potential donors.

2. Assist the Dean and the development office in cultivating and soliciting these and other potential donors.

3. Accept responsibility for supporting the school's long-term economic needs by actively supporting fundraising efforts, and working to secure major outright, planned, or estate gifts.

4. Participate in advising the Dean and help frame the long-range strategic direction of the school.

5. Provide an external perspective that will inform the dean and administration to help shape priorities.

School's responsibilities to members of the board:

  • Provide information needed to serve in a meaningful and responsible manner
  • Be respectful of board members time and use it efficiently and effectively
  • Use board member financial contributions effectively and as designated
  • Provide appropriate recognition and acknowledgement for services and contributions
  • Respond to board member questions and concerns
  • Allow opportunities for feedback and constructive criticism
